Keith L. Johnson, Chapter 7- Theology in Christ
Descriptive Summary: Summarize the text substantively in about 300 words. Be sure that your write your own summary and that it is content-rich, highlighting concepts and their meanings, especially those that appear new to you. Do not merely report the outline, how the assigned book/article/chapter is laid out. Do not report its structure without its substance. Write the summary directly without expression such as, The author argues that…. Johnson further claims that…I think the author dismisses… Write the summary directly, as if the author were reiterating the content very briefly and substantively, then use the SBL style format to show the references.
2-3 New Theological Vocabularies and Critical Insights:
Name all the new/difficult theological words you have encountered, specifying those you have understood and those youre still working on understanding.
Name and explain at least 2-3 specific insights about God, Christianity, Churches, evil/suffering/pain, faith, Jesus, etc. that the author discusses and that you understood. An insight is a full, direct, quotation that bears an important message that you found arresting or worth sharing. Discuss each insight for the sake of understanding, regardless of whether you agree or not. Use the following structure as you build each insight: a) Report the specific quote, b) discuss the co- texts (significant information preceding and following that helps understand this quote), c) what does the quote mean in that context, and d) why is this insight important for our world (academia, church, religion, science, your field, etc.) today; and why is it important for you, in particular. State whether it agrees or disagrees with a previous understanding you might have held, specifying the source of your previous understanding (church, popular Christianity, books, a different religion/philosophy that you need to specify).
3) 2-3 Reflexive Questioning:
Name at least two challenges, claims, or arguments from the author that you are
still brooding over. For instance, what life questions or theological issues do you not understand or are curious about? Name specific ideas about people, creation/cosmos, God, Christianity, Churches, evil/suffering, prosperity, faith, Jesus, etc. that the author has not clarified or has challenged you to seek to understand more. Give specific sources of your previously understanding that agrees/disagrees/completes with the authors. Mention is the author leaves you with a better understanding or more confused on the subject. Construct these questions as something who is trying to understand to add value to life, not as someone who is merely set to belittle the author or to quarrel aimlessly.
