Task: Students will select one scene from either Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer(2018) OR Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona(2019) and one of the formal elements studied in class (e.g., setting & design, costuming & makeup, lighting, framing, editing, and sound), and produce a 300-400 word analysis. Students must move beyond the ‘internal world’ of the film, and interpret how the film uses its audio-visual elements to make a comment on society and culture (e.g., class, gender, and race). Clips chosen should be about 1-2 minutes long. Please include the timestamp of your scene in your assignment submission A successful response will include the following: ❏a thesis statement–students need to construct an argument about how the film uses lighting, costuming, editing, etc. to comment on culture and society ❏a brief desсrіption of how the formal element is used on-screen (ie. summary) ❏sustained analysis of how the chosen formal element is being used by the filmmaker to comment on society and culture ❏in-text citations, if applicable–students should consult the assigned articles when formulating their responses and properly cite any ideas that are not their own ❏concise and effective writing–students should concentrate on getting 1 major point across REMEMBER! When analyzing a film scene: 1.Suspend your judgement. You are not evaluating whether the scene is good or bad, you are investigating what the scene is saying about society and culture. 2.Define significant moments or details. What do you notice? Why are these details important? 3.Ask ‘so what?’ What is the significance of these details? Within the world of the film? In relation to broader society and culture (ie. how we think about race, gender, colonial or military power, nation, space/place,fear, revenge, repression, oppression, etc.) 4.Rewatch the scene and revise your observations/interpretations.
