As you can see in the second half of Chapter 6, the Romans were great monument builders. They built monuments to celebrate peace, to commemorate military victories, and to exalt their Emperors. We also build monuments. In this discussion we are going to talk about why we build monuments. Consider the following questions: 1. What types of events and people are featured on the monuments we build in the US? Identify at least 2 different types of events or people and give us an example of one monument for each type. These can be local or they can be outside of Hampton Roads. 2. Why do we build these monuments? What do they accomplish for our society? 3. What do our monuments say about our cultural values?
