Guided Lecture Notes, Chapter 2, Beginning Your Nursing Career Learning Objective 1. Compare the education and level of practice between registered and practical nurses. Discuss the multidisciplinary approach of healthcare in the 21st century and review the unique educational requirements associated with different healthcare positions. Explain the various types of educational programs that lead to licensure. List the steps involved in achieving a licensure as a healthcare provider. The individual starts with a minimum of 4 years of undergraduate study and continues with 4 years of medical school, after which the graduate doctor must take a licensure examination before practicing. Specialization may involve an additional 2 to 6 years of study and additional years of advanced study may occur. Review the three basic types of education that lead to the RN license. Discuss why agencies are needed to approve the nursing programs provided by a nursing school. List the functions of the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses (NFLPN).
