The Legacy of Cold War Crises: Write an eight to ten-page essay in which you address some post-Cold War international problem connecting it to its Cold War origins. You will have wide latitude here, but you must connect some current international situation to the legacy of the Cold War. You must use your text and a minimum of four other scholarly sources to defend your thesis. Some aspect of the Middle East problems would be one way to address this assignment, although there are literally hundreds of international situations worthy of your attention, in Europe, Asia, South America, and elsewhere. The narrower you can refine your topic, the better. Get right to the point. Leave the background material out. Assume the reader knows the background. Start by introducing the problem and why it remains a problem to this day. Then, and only then, provide the least amount of background material that will ensure your reader understands. There will be any number of possible topics from the text and/or the other course materials. If you have questions about what would make a good topic or how you might approach a certain topic, do not hesitate to contact me. An example, which you may not use, would be the United States relationship to the Ukraine, how it existed when Ukraine was a part of the USSR and how that relationship developed in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
