1n 1983 the American Academy of Nursing identified 41 hospitals in the US that exhibited characteristics that made them a preferred worksite for nurses. These 41 sites are now known as “Magnet Hospitals”. This publication sparked a lot of discussion about the criteria used in designating certain work sites as better than others. The outcome of this discussion was the establishment of an accreditation process by which hospitals could apply for this status. If they meet the criteria, then they could refer to themselves as “Magnet Hospitals”. This portion of the class will chronicle the development of this process of magnet recognition from its beginnings to what it has become today.

Objectives: At the end of this session the participant will be able to:
1. Identify the five main parts of today’s Magnet Model.
2. Identify selected activities occurring in a chosen health care organization that contributes
to achieving Magnet Recognition.
3. Identify activities that would need to be improved if the organization chose to become Magnet Designated.
