FULLY ARTICULATED RQ; CONTEXT: In the American South during the 60s, White women, like Skeeter, were stereotypically portrayed by the media. They were put under the pressure of society’s archetypal expectations of being helpless housewives. The latter should only be confined to their houses to prepare for motherhood, as singlehood was stigmatized back then. These stereotypes increased the discrimination against African-American women in terms of employment prospects. There were pay gaps, just like the segregational treatments that Katherine Johnson was subjected to in her workplace. PROBLEMATIC: How did patriarchy, the stigmatization of singlehood, and the gender-stereotyped portrayal of women in the media, play a massive role in consolidating the segregational canons against Black women in the American South about pay gaps and inequitable job opportunities. ANALYSIS: This paper will analyze the cultural wars raged against the traditional predominating notions of gender in the American South; Mississippi and Virginia in Hidden Figures and The Help THEORY; and attempt to identify how white male power figures as perpetrators play out and affect the relationships between adamant women striving to reach liberty and independence (Skeeter and Katherine Johnson), and bigoted men with deeply ingrained biases against feminism. Since women started getting educated and getting jobs, employment is affected by gender inequality. Women tend to fill more vulnerable jobs than men. Men are more likely to be managers and owners of business while women are more likely to be assistants or just helping in a business. Since the beginning of time, women have always been portrayed by the media or society as soft and housewives. Like skeeter, the main character of the movie, the help. She faced desscrimimnation in her job interview by a male interviewee who didn’t pay attention to her and made her feel like she doesn’t belong in a workplace. Even when she wanted to write a book no one from her family or friends supported her because they were only focusing on her getting married after finishing this part start with Annotated bibiliography Begin your annotated bibliography by copy pasting your fully articulated research question as a title at the top of the page. By fully articulated, I mean including the context, problematic, analysis… Just like the sample! Arrange your five sources in alphabetical order, make sure all of them are credible, three scholarly, two media or non-scholarly. The non-scholarly sources should not be from Wikipedia, but you are encouraged to read Wikipedia sources and find your own sources from the references that wiki provides. Site your first source in MLA If you are unfamiliar with MLA you may visit owlpurdue.edu which will tell you how to cite anything, any source in any citation format. You will find a sample MLA work cited page on OWL which you can use as a reference. Underneath the citation you can begin to answer the three questions for each of the five sources; MINIMUM 3 sentences per answer- no word count The first question asks what kind of source this is? Why did the author write it? What is she or he trying to explore or analyze? Is this a Masters thesis? Or a PhD dissertation? Or a scholarly article in a journal? Try not to say “this source” but say instead “Dr. Mohamed‘s article…” Be sure to format your titles correctly! A publication is always italicized, but an article in a publication is put in quotes. A freestanding paper is italicized. But if it appears in a publication it is quoted and the publication title is italicized. The second question asks you to verify the credibility of the author; you may also verify the credibility of the publication, for instance a scholarly publication might be quite prestigious, but you would not say “this is a prestigious publication,” instead you would tell us why it is prestigious, what university it is connected to or what center the level or quality of the publications it contains etc. etc. New young authors may not have a lot of credentials however visit google to learn more about them– what school they attended and then focus on the validity of the publication. Is it peer viewed? Did it win awards? The third question asks how the source is relevant to your paper; how does this source support your theory? You should be able to answer that. a sample of annotated bibliography
