1.What do I need to do in this assignment? A: You need to find most suitable location for a new small supermarket or convenience store in Liverpool based on a set of selection criteria outline in the Lecture week 4. 2.What is the difference between the practical and assignment? A: In both practicals you learn how to use different GIS/spatial analysis techniques and explore various datasets. In the actual assignment you need to use those newly gained skills and combine them with various concepts of retail geography from lectures 3 and 4 to deliver a store location analysis. In the assignment, you need to combine various pieces of information from the practicals to provide empirical evidence. 3.How do I know which are the small/medium supermarkets or convenience stores (c-stores)? A: Use the size_sqm column of the FoodStores 2019 file to determine this: c-stores less than 280sqm, small/medium supermarkets between 280 and 1400sqm. Also the Liverpool Stores file provides a simple split into c-stores and supermarkets 4.What are the selection criteria? A: This is down to you and should be based on literature, but I suggest that as a minimum you include total population, income, online shopping prevalence and competition 5.What tables should I include? A: Your table(s) should be numeric and provide supporting evidence for your arguments/location analysis. In order to save your evidence as a csv table right click on the layer of interest then Export>Save Features As> choose Comma Separated Values[csv] format from the drop-down menu. 6.What’s the word count of the report? A: It is 500max – exceeding the word count will attract penalty points. The report should be very concise (3-4 pages is sufficient) and it needs to have clear structure, avoid vagueness. 7.Do I need to use any additional data (not explored in the practicals)? What additional datasets can I use? A: You don’t have to use any additional data, however if you’re aiming at high marks then you can use a number of additional datasets (which will give you extra points) including the 2019 IMD, 2018 IUC and geodemographics (OAC) – all available from the CDRC website. 8.Is the 5-day grace period applicable to this assignment? A: Currently not, so you need to stick to the original deadline. The grace period was applied to assignments in Semester 1.
