Prompt:
Many today believe that images and symbols, especially in scripture, are vessels for emotions or ways of hiding the truth of things. The Catholic Church, in her art, architecture, and way of speaking, disagrees. How does Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) explain the ways images and symbols must be read as signs of a deeper reality? How do images and symbols, especially those of the creation accounts, help us understand the deeper meaning in Genesis?
