Consider for example, how gender is interconnected with other identities for example race, as it was explored through the Olivia Pope character in “Scandal”. Address at least one issue raised in “Miss Representation” and how this documentary addresses or does not how gender intersects with other social identities including race, ethnicity, sexuality, and/or age. Most importantly, in reading about the mammification of Olivia Pope or the representation of women in media, locate the presence of place or the geographical landscape. How does the “place” of Olivia Pope matter? Discuss specifically how place or geography is represented in the episode you viewed. How is it addressed in “Miss Representation.” As geographers, we accept that space matters, so where in the materials can you identify how place, space, or geography matters? Your essay should consist of the following aspects (the below is also provides a general outline for all your essays):
Introduction: Begin by “hooking” your reader with an interesting fact, a question, or puzzle. Clearly state your position. Your intro should also state the articles/videos/theories that you will be working with.
Theory: Define intersectionality/Black feminist thought.
Evidence/Cases: Present a summary of the “Scandal” episode you viewed and the issue/topic from “Miss Representation” you plan to address.
Intersectionality and Geography: In this section offer your analysis. Discuss how intersectionality and geography shape and inform the experience and representation of women.
Conclusion: Summarize your arguments and also provide a suggestion for next steps, or what more you think could be explored to gain a better understanding of pop culture and its relationship to gender, intersectionality, and place.
