Many boys today are struggling, according to Pollack, either quietly with poor self-esteem and feelings of loneliness and isolation, or publicly, by expressing their emotional and social detachment by rage and acts of violence against themselves, their friends, and their families. While academic achievement and self-esteem are low, suicide and depression rates are rising. Much has been written about adolescent girls’ struggles, including low self-esteem, an increasing focus on looks, gender prejudice in the classroom, and a lack of understanding of what it means to be feminine. Pollack revealed that boys have a similar gender identity issue before they reach adolescence. Male babies are more emotionally expressive than infant girls, according to research.
However, a boy’s emotional expressiveness lessens as he grows older. Why? Because society’s understanding of what it means to be a boy, known as ‘The Boy Code,’ requires boys to hide or conceal their feelings.
