Adaptation Analysis Papers: During this course I will ask you to write three 500-word minimum papers on a specific
aspect of a films adaptation of a novel. In general, these papers demonstrate the way a film adaptation is
also an interpretation of the novel from which it is derived. Rather than simply telling me that the film is
in some ways different from the novel, Im interested in why and how those differences matter for our
understanding of the issue at hand.
Paper 1
Adaptation Analysis Paper #1: Thea von Harbou, Metropolis and Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang
Develop a thesis statement that compares the novels ending to that of the films ending. The point of your thesis statement is to tell me how and why the comparison you make impacts the interpretation of the texts (film and novel). Construct your paper so that the topic sentences of each paragraph addresses a distinct implication of the comparison you make. For instance, why does it matter that the ending of the film suggests a reconciliation of the Hands and the Brain, while the ending of the novel suggests that the social and material structure of Metropolis has been utterly destroyed?
Construct your paper so that the topic sentences of each paragraph addresses a distinct implication of the argument you make.
You must use specific quotations from the novel and refer to specific scenes of the film to make your point.
You must use correct grammar and spelling.
