Essay Topic: Write a personal narrative/reflective essay answering the following question: What role has your family played in shaping the kind of person you are today? Do not write about your family in general. Pick a specific experience to describe and then discuss how that particular event shows how your family influences you. Think of what you most want to discuss in order to answer the topic’s question. What do you want to convey about your family and its influence? Choose one event as the focus for your story. Describe that event in detail. Then, spend time reflecting (writing your thoughts/understandings) about how the event shows your family’s influence. What did the event teach you about yourself and your family, and about your place in the larger world? What is the meaning of the event? A good reflective essay must include: a specific (& narrow/limited) experience that shapes your thinking/understanding sensory details to “show, not tell” the experience the personal meaning to you the broader (or universal) meaning of your experience Requirements You must turn in a complete rough draft to Turn It In in order to receive feedback on your final draft.
