Essay Assignment #3: Deconstructing a Myth or Stereotype about your Identity
Word Count: ~1000 words (include word count in your heading)
You MUST write this essay in MLA and include a works-cited page. If you do not do this, you will receive a 0!
Please write an essay in which you do the following:
1) Explain what stereotypes are and why they’re problematic. Then, explain why people believe them. Include at least one of the following concepts: prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination, implicit bias, ingroup-outgroup phenomenon, in-group bias. This video might help:

2) Pick a myth or stereotype(s) that people have about some part of your identity. For example, “Asians are good at math”, “women are too emotional”, “men are weak if they cry”, or “immigrants are criminals”.
3) Next, research and explain why this stereotype is inaccurate.
A successful essay will include the following:
Imagine you are writing this for someone who believes these stereotypes. Your goal is to educate them!
A clear and comprehensive summary paragraph that outlines the stereotype(s).
Use at least 3 sources.
Two to three response paragraphs that dispel the stereotype(s), each carefully analyzing and evaluating a different dimension or characteristic of the problem(s), and each headed by a clear topic sentence announcing the particular topic of analysis
Use of well-chosen evidence in each paragraph in the response section; this evidence should come from other readings and from personal experience or observation and should be used to support, extend or critique your argument.
