Write a 4-6 page paper analyzing key aspects of the Arabic language’s recent historical and contemporary socio-political context. 1. History of the community in the US- Briefly historicize relevant speech communities’ existence in the United States. How did the language and community of speakers become a part of the US linguistic landscape? For example, if the speakers of this language emigrated from another place, discuss migration flows (pushes and pulls) and patterns. Discuss how this research matches up with your interviews. (1-2 pgs) 2. General political and cultural overview – Describe significant social aspects. How popular is the language? Specifically, how many speakers are there in the US? Is it recognizable to many non-speakers? Is it considered a legitimate or respected language? For example, is it taught as a foreign language in schools? Are there heritage language programs in the US to promote it? Are their stereotypes about it? What is its status in terms of vitality? Has it ever been endangered? Is it widely spoken in any parts of the world? In any specific regions or cities in the US? Are there any language policies (government or educational) that affect this language? You should briefly address all of these questions as well as any other social aspects you deem relevant, and discuss in detail those that you consider especially significant. 3. Community challenges and advances- Discuss whether or not the language community has been stigmatized or marginalized in any way. Is the language associated with any ethnic, racial, religious, or social groups? Are there any economic challenges that many members of this community face? If so, what trends or statistics demonstrate these challenges (employment, income, criminal, homelessness)? What do scholars think are the causes of these challenges? Is the community more economically secure or more educated than the average American? Cite statistics. Are there any citizenship or other political challenges that many members of this community face? Are there any specific health or environmental issues that have impacted the community? Do religious practices and/or beliefs impact the experiences of any members of this community? Do they affect the way any members of this community are treated (or were treated)? Presently and historically, has there been any social justice movements or policy changes that have supported – or marginalized – members of this community in terms of religion?
