In a well-developed academic essay, synthesize the information presented in four or five credible articles to answer your research question. (Note: a dictionary does not count as a source.) First, choose a topic you would like to research and generate a research question. (Abortion is off-limits; however, you may choose any other research topic that interests you.) Your research question must be clearly stated in your introduction paragraph. Your thesis statement will be the answer to this question, based on your own perspective as informed by your research. After you identify a research question, find four or five credible articles that provide information that will help you answer this question. The body of your essay must explain the answer to your research question (as stated in your thesis statement) in a coherent and organized way, using your research for support. Quote, summarize, and paraphrase your sources effectively to develop your argument (and don’t forget to cite!). Your essay should be organized in a logical way according to ideas, not sources. For example, you may want to discuss the problem first, then the benefits of the proposed solution, and finally the negative potential consequences of the solution that lead you, ultimately, to disagree with the proposed solution, in spite of its potential benefits. In this type of logical organization, any given source may be used in multiple places in your essay to develop different parts of your argument. Do not simply present the information from each source in list format. The purpose of this essay is to synthesize information from multiple sources to make your own argument, as well as to demonstrate your mastery of the research and writing concepts we have studied this semester. Evaluate the credibility of your sources. Organize your essay in a logical way. Develop your paragraphs with specific support from your sources and explanation of this support. Transition clearly between ideas and clearly express how ideas from different sources relate to each other and to your main claim. Use correct formatting and citations.
