Corporate Research – Financial Analysis Case Study | Part 3 – Financial Ratio Analysis and Performance Evaluation

Select a second publicly-traded company that operates within the same industry as your initial company from Part 1.
Obtain the annual financial reports (10K) for the competitor, locating the most recent reporting data. You will also use the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (opens in new window) website to locate these reports.
Refer to the financial reports of your original publicly-traded company as well.
Perform a financial ratio analysis using the two companies’ financial data as follows:
Select and calculate TWO ratios from EACH of the following analysis categories for both of the companies you selected:
Profitability
Liquidity
Solvency
Compare the companies from an analyst’s point of view, examining which of the companies has the better ratio results within each of the categories you analyzed.
Write a report in support of your findings from the comparative analysis using the following format and criteria:
Introduction
Name the two companies, re-introducing your original organization, and briefly describe the background of the newly selected corporation in the same industry
Include appropriate illustrations of the financial data obtained (e.g. charts, graphics, etc.)
Describe the ratio calculations made and explain the importance of the ratios being presented.
Example of describing a ratio calculation: When evaluating leverage and financial solvency, one ratio that is often used is the debt-to-asset ratio. This ratio examines the coverage an organization has over their debt with their asset holdings. XXX Company currently has $50 million of debts for fiscal year 2017 and $100 million of assets for the same period (citation source, date). Based on these figures, their debt-to-asset ratio is 1:2 or 50% (citation source, date) – OR – XXX Requirements Part 3 – Financial Ratio Analysis and Performance Evaluation Company’s debt-to-asset ratio, as calculated using the data provided from Figure 1 (citation source, date) for their fiscal year, 2017 is 1:2 or 50%.
Evaluate the ratio calculations by discussing which organization has the better financial health between the two companies.
In your evaluation, you can also expand your analysis by locating financial data highlights within the competitor’s financial statements and comparing them to your original company’s financials and/or analysis information from Part 2.
State which company would be a better investment, and why?
What recommendations would you provide to the management of the company with inferior financial health?
What specific recommendations or changes would you make in the company’s operations?
