We began this class with Reconstruction and the promise of a country where “all men (and women) are created equal.” But, resistance to equality led to violence and segregation. It would take almost one hundred years for African Americans to begin to realize that promise of equality made so long ago.
Describe Martin Luther King’s strategy of nonviolent resistance. Use your book or class lectures to describe at least one example of the use of this strategy during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. What was the motive of nonviolent resistance? Do you think the media helped to make nonviolent resistance more effective? Why or why not?
