1) Using the lectures, readings, and film about the Central American Civil Wars, explain the causes of Nicaraguan, Salvadoran, and/or Guatemalan migration to the US. Describe the challenges these Latinx groups faced in the 1980s both in their home countries and in the United States. How did they respond to these challenges in the US and what was the Sanctuary Movement? How and why was their immigration status finally resolved in the 1990s? 2) Using the lectures and readings on Cuba, compare and contrast the experiences and migration of Cuban Americans to the United States to the experience of one other Latinx group that migrated to the US. What were the conditions that caused Cuban outmigration from their home country? How were Cubans received in the United States and why? How did this contrast to the experience of the other Latinx group? 3) Compare and contrast the Chicano Power movement to the Puerto Rican Civil Rights movement. What were key aspects of the African American Civil Rights movement that set the stage for these movements? What were the conditions that caused these Latinx communities to fight for civil rights during the 1960s and 1970s? In what ways were their fights similar to or different from one another’s? What were their successes? What were some of the divisions and challenges within their movement?
