Introduce teacher and explain what you’ll be doing during the observation.
Part 1: In your position as a reading coach, identify a beginning teacher, observe the teacher in
the classroom, describe the methods being used, and provide a summary of the observation and
recommendations for improvement.
Part 2: As the reading coach, design (1) a plan to either enhance the strategies the teacher is
using or (2) a plan to help the teacher improve instruction. Either plan will accommodate the
needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
Part 3: As the reading coach, meet with the teacher to share your plan. For example:
a. Model best practices that the teacher should be implementing and /or discuss best
practices being used. Support your plan with theories of reading.
b. Demonstrate how to integrate reading and writing with the content area using a wide
range of texts (ILA Standard 2.1)
c. Discuss a variety of classroom groupings that would differentiate instruction. (ILA
Standard 5.4)
d. Suggest assessment practices that should be used in the classroom to evaluate the
student’s performance. (ILA Standard 3.3)
Part 4: Conclusion and share the plan with your colleagues and include their comments in your report and reflect on whether related changes need to be made to the plan.
