If you have not written a paper yet for class, this is your paper topic. You must examine one of the darkest aspects of the 20th century: the numerable instances of mass atrocities, even in the “civilized” world. You will compare two instances of genocide in the 20th century: the mass murder of Jews by Nazi Germany and the slaughter of Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994. What are the origins of these two genocides? What do they have in common? How are they different? Are the genocides committed in the 20th century “new” phenomena, or are they just different manifestations of an age-old habit of slaughter? Why has the 20th century been called “the age of genocide”? Can we end genocide?
Do not start by Googling the topic. First read your textbook on the rise of radical politics and utopianism, especially chapters 28 and 29. Then, carefully read all of the following primary source documents for evidence to answer the above questions. (Many students find it useful to print out the documents so that they can highlight text and write in the margins for later use.) Then, write an outline of your essay with an introduction, thesis, support, and conclusion regarding the development, effects, and patterns of genocide in the 20th century. Once you have an idea of what each paragraph is going to say, go back and rewrite your introduction to strengthen your thesis. Once that is done, you are ready to write the entire paper. Think about what you want to say in the conclusion; it should be more than just a restatement of your introduction. Be sure to make explicit use of the primary sources in supporting your argument, whether by paraphrases or direct quotations. Although useful for providing context for the primary source, the introductory material for each document is not considered a primary source.
