Inmate Reintegration into the Community Many of the inmates being released back into the community are poorly prepared in regards to their personal and social skills. Many do not have sufficient education or trade related skills. A large number of them suffer from drug and alcohol dependency and many suffer from mental illness. Once their sentences are served they may not have report to a community corrections officer. If they have support in their community they may succeed. However, what happens if the released inmate has served many years in prison without receiving sufficient skill and mental health treatment. Drugs and alcohol are easily available inside prisons. After long sentences many released inmates are in their late 40s or 50s. Often their families have either died or are no longer in existence. Therefore many of these individuals end up being homeless and without drug and alcohol or mental health treatment. This holds true for large and small communities alike. Research the professional literature, the media, and the internet and identify community based programs that assist released inmates to reintegrate back into the community.
