Topic: This week will begin our unit on intersectionality. Intersectionality is based on the idea that not all women have the same gendered constructs. Women’s experiences are influenced and shaped by constructs relating to gender AND race; gender AND sexuality; gender AND class status; gender AND citizenship. We begin by looking at the intersection of gender AND race with examining the social constructs of black women. After exploring Week 8’s selections, explain why intersectionality is an important framework to apply to gender? What do we have to lose if we neglect an intersectional perspective?
