Primary Interview Assignment: As always, be sure your document is properly formatted in accordance with MLA requirements. Notice that there is – NO – Q and A in the final essay. You introduce your subject the first time with first and last name. After the first time, you move to last name only even if you are interviewing a friend. This is true for ANY source. When you are finished, attach the assignment as you normally do. If you do not mention the interview in your lead-in, you need to put it in the parenthetical at the end of the sentence (interview). See the example above. In a formal interview that is reproduced in an essay, it should follow regular paragraph format, but you will leave yourself out of the paper. Effectively, you′re just using your interviewee′s statements as quotations in your paper. You will introduce and quote your subject as you would any other source. The difference here is that you have someone providing you with information verbally rather than reading it in an article. This is the best information that you can put in a research paper, a one on one interview with a subject who is an expert in the field on which you are writing about. You can interview your subject on any topic; it does not have to connect to the interview that you will be using for Paper 2. This is practice. However, if you know what you will be writing about in the second paper you can kill the proverbial two birds with one stone. For a formal paper you can do a face-to-face interview, an email interview, a phone interview, a Facebook interview, or use any number of ways to connect to your source. The best way to start any interview is with a general informal chat session before segueing into the interview. Sometimes just talking with someone will lead into a very good interview.
