In the 1923 manifesto Toward an Architecture, the architect Le Corbusier proclaimed, “A house is a machine for living in. Baths, sun, hot-water, cold-water, warmth at will, conservation of food, hygiene, beauty in the sense of good proportion.” His contemporary Eileen Gray later responded, “A house is not a machine to live in.
