The Assignment
For this assignment, you will draw on information generated from class lectures to write a 2 to 3 page essay (600 to 800 words) in which you respond to one of the following questions and form a thesis-driven argument. Your purpose is to inform and persuade a general audience of non-experts in Mexican-American History.
Question 1: Why did the Zoot Suit Riots take place?
Question 2: How did the bracero program affect workers?
Question 3: Activists like Csar Chvez and Dolores Huerta played pivotal roles in the farm workers movement. How was this movement a bridge between the Chicano community and the larger society?
Question 4: How did the threat of Communism affect Mexican Americans?
Question 5: How did the Mexican American Movement transform society?
Question 6: How did the media’s portrayal of Mexican Americans, between the years 1940 and 1980 influence historical events? (EG Sleep Lagoon, LA Walkouts, Zoot Suit Riots, Grape Boycott, etc.)
