As we read the plays, it is important to focus on the characters in the play. Playwrights create characters with a specific purpose. This purpose is revealed through their lines in the play. Every character has a goal, is dealing with an obstacle to that goal, and is affecting and reacting to the other characters in each scene.
For this assignment, choose a character WHO IS NOT THE MAIN CHARACTER from either Hamlet or Oedipus the King, Trifles, or A Doll House and write a 1 page analysis of her or his purpose in the play. Answer the following questions in your essay:
What is the character’s goal in the play?
What obstacle is the character trying to overcome?
What does the character’s language reveal about her or him? – Use 4 quotes from the text as evidence to prove your argument.
How does this character affect the main character in the play?
