In this project i have calculated the Gini coefficient and various wage differentials for two countries at two moments in time (2004 & 2013).The calculations are done in a spreadsheet (Excel) and also the spreadsheet is part of the deliverables.
For this task i have selected data from:
https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/microdata/statistics-on-income-and-living-conditions
We focused on household data (since those files are most easy to handle), and we use the household register files, for example, file BE_2013d_EUSILC for Belgium in the year 2013.
Steps that were done:
In some cases all data are combined in the first column so we need a text to column operation, using a comma as a separator, to transform the text into numbers.
Second: we see as columns in the datafile:
DB010: year
DB020: country
DB030: household ID number
DB040: region within country (we do not need this)
DB062: secondary sampling units (not used)
However, these calculations are already made and i have put the Excel file in the uploaded files!
We have to make sure to clearly understand the meaning of these data. On the mentioned website (link) you can find more information.
The thing you need to do is to interpret and compare the results, i.e. compare the development of wage differentials with the Gini, within the two countries and across the countries!
