Research Question:
Clearly define your topic and frame a relevant research question. Make sure your research question is specific enough to be addressed through quantitative means. Methodology:
Describe the method and statistical methods you intend to use. This should align closely with your research question.
Data Collection: Collect data that will allow you to address your research question. This could be in the form of surveys, experiments, or observational studies.
Data Analysis:
Perform in-depth statistical analyses of your collected data. Use appropriate statistical tests or models and clearly document your findings. You can ask me for some help with this, under the condition that your data is nicely formatted in a spreadsheet and you know exactly what analysis you’d like to do. Also a tip: Your spreadsheet should have the individuals as rows going down, and the measurements as columns going across. Report: Submit a well-organized report detailing each step of your research project, from question formulation to data collection and analysis. Video: Prepare a presentation summarizing your research process and findings. This should be engaging, well-structured, and informative.
Ethical Considerations:
Ensure that your research conforms to ethical guidelines. Do not ask about any sensitive topics such as traumatic experiences or anything that could get them in trouble at school or work. For this project, make sure to structure your questions to gather data in a way that’s conducive to the statistical analysis you plan to perform. Don’t forget that you can ask about multiple things in the same survey (e.g., exercise habits, conscientiousness, AND if they prefer cats or dogs). There are no rules. Mix and match, as long as you have a reason for doing so! You’ll definitely want to use Google Forms if you’re collecting self-report data from others online. If you’re approaching people on the street, then maybe you’ll want to print out a questionnaire or record responses on your clipboard instead. But you could also just load up Google Forms on your phone and fill out your own form over and over again. In Google forms, there’s an option under Settings → Presentation to shuffle question order. You may or may not want to randomize the order of your questions. It’s up to you, but know that it’s an option. You have the option of asking your classmates to participate in your research as subjects. However, this is not a requirement and you may also use other populations for your study.
