The audio file you have runs about an hour and a half. I decided not to break it up, mostly for
convenience, having less files for you to manage (and probably mess up), etc. But the podcast
covers three topics:
– Home video/streaming
– Synergy among media industries
– Video Games
It’s pretty obvious during the podcast when one topic ends and another begins. But, for a guide,
here are some relevant time stamps.
RV Assignments #9 and #10
The final two RV assignments relate to this podcast. You basically get 15 exam questions ahead
of time! So there’s a lot more “value” than just the point apiece you get for the RV assignments. Seriously…they are the EXACT exam questions with the EXACT answer choices. (Note: RV assignment #10 also contains some questions related to the video you also have on
pop music. But some of that is on the exam as well, so you get even more practice for the exam). RV Assignment #10 – The first five questions are from the standardized material podcast.
The second five questions are from the lecture video on pop music. All ten questions are multiple choice.
ONLY THE QUESTIONS FROM THE PODCAST ARE STANDARDIZED EXAM
QUESTIONS. The exam does, though, also include some material from the video on pop music.
Questions 1-5 are from the standardized material podcast
1. Which of the following makes adapting video games to film and TV challenging?
(You get some statements about how adapting video games might work/function and need tp
pick the correct one; the answer has to do with the experience of gaming)
2. Which of the following makes Sony unique?
(Another one that might not make sense without the choices, but I think we’re pretty direct in talking about something Sony didn’t do that lots of its competitors in film/TV did.)
3. The decision of streamers to rely more heavily on advertising can be seen as a response to what phenomenon that is unique to streaming?
4. Which of the following is an example of the potential for a digital dark age?
(Again, you get several traits of digital media, pick the one that’s linked to a digital dark age in our discussion)
5. Which of the following business strategies that were central to the streaming wars ere are being abandoned or downplayed by media companies?
Questions 6-10 are from the lecture video on pop music; these are NOT direct exam questions though some of this material is on the exam in other forms
6. This video addresses what theme that we’ve discussed a lot in class, but haven’t necessarily discussed yet in terms of pop music?
7. What was the PMRC?
8. Who maybe likes bondage and sadomasochism?
9. In controversies over censorship in pop music in the ’80s, who were the “villains” in public opinion, according to my commentary?
10. According to the video, what do Prince and Def Leppard have in common (other than being awesome…) recommended you handle those assignments over fall break. I’d take notes/try to fill out answers
here, then take the quizzes on Canvas for RV Assignments #9 and #10. But, with this being an audio file, it’s also easier to just try to take the quiz as you listen. However you want to do it.RV Assignment #9 – All ten of these questions relate to the standardized material podcast
(and, again, these are the EXACT questions you’ll get on the end of semester exam).
Questions 1-5 are True or False statements:
1. T or F – Film studios initially charged a premium price for their film releases on video tape because of their concerns with copying.
2. T or F – Although the VCR and video tape technology were originally marketed to consumers for time-shifting programming, consumers preferred to use the technology to view pre-recorded content.

Questions 6-10 are multiple choice:
6. Which of the following is true of the relationship between video games and film/TV?
7. Which of the following is true of mergers between media companies in the aftermath of the streaming wars?
(Again, maybe hard to understand without the answer choices, but we talk about how the nature of mergers are changing; that’s where the answer is)
8. In what year, did the first wave of video game popularity end?
9. Which of these technologies was an important precursor to streaming?
(You get a list of several types of technology to choose from)
