Like all of social work practice, the phases of engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation can be applied to the mezzo level of groups. For this assignment, you will be designing an intervention for a problem in the dynamics of a group. View the group simulation for this assignment. Following this please address the following questions in a 3-4 page paper. Utilize the resources from class as well as at least one outside peer-reviewed article to inform your responses. Cite throughout the paper to support your arguments/decisions.
Assessment (10 points)– what is your assessment of the group dynamics in the session? Attend to communication patterns and interactions, cohesion, norms, and culture of the group. Notice problematic and supportive dynamics in each area. Identify at the end of the assessment section which problematic dynamic you will address and why you have chosen that.
Reflection (5 points)– what are your reactions to the problematic behavior/dynamic? Have you had episodes of having the same behavior in the past?
Problem Statement (5 points)- What is your theory of why this problematic dynamic is happening? What is underneath the behavior? This is a working theory statement. It doesn’t need to be long.
Intervention (10 points)– describe two intervention strategies that you could utilize to address one problematic dynamic in this group. One intervention should be connected to Yalom’s preferred strategy of focusing on the here and now in the group. The other intervention can be from another theoretical understanding. In your description of the interventions describe the specifics of how you would intervene and how is that intervention tied to your theory. Support your intervention with source(s).
Evaluation (5 points)– what outcome would you hope for from the intervention? What would you see in the following session that would indicate the intervention was effective?
