Assessment in Elementary education
Exam Content
To be an effective teacher, you will use the data you collect from assessments for multiple reasons. Some of the most important reasons are to measure student learning and determine the next steps in your teaching. Consistently analyzing assessment data will also help you monitor your students’ learning, select future assessments, evaluate your teaching skills, and provide better assessment feedback to students and parents/caregivers.
As a teacher, it can feel as though you are inundated with student information and assessment data before you even meet your students and start the school year. Therefore, it’s crucial that you have a plan for how you will use the data and be able to articulate this plan, if asked. For this assessment, you will outline your plan for assessing and evaluating student learning, including how assessment data and analysis will be used in the process.
Scenario
Assume you are a new teacher at your school and the school’s administrator has requested you to outline your plan for assessing and evaluating student learning as an elementary education teacher.
Preparation
Choose a grade level you want to teach (K–6th grade) and use it as the basis for this summative assessment.
Assessment Deliverable
Use the Assessing and Evaluating Student Learning Outline and create a minimum 525-word outline of your plan for using assessment data and analysis. Highlight your data literacy skills (i.e., using assessment data and analysis) to monitor student learning, select assessments, evaluate instruction, and provide feedback to all stakeholders. Include the following information for each section in the Assessing and Evaluating Student Learning Outline:
Introduction
Consider your selected grade level and explain the importance of using assessment data and analysis in your overall teaching practice.
Provide at least 2 examples of support resources and/or individuals you could reach out to for guidance related to assessment data and analysis.
Monitor Student Learning
Explain how you will use assessment data and analysis to monitor student learning in your classroom.
Provide at least 2 examples of grade-level appropriate monitoring and/or assessment tools and strategies.
Select Assessments
Explain how you will use assessment data and analysis to select appropriate assessments and plan future instruction.
Provide at least 2 examples of how the data and analysis will provide guidance for selecting assessments and planning instruction.
Evaluate Teaching Skills
Explain the type of information you will look for in assessment data to specifically evaluate your own teaching skills.
Provide at least 2 examples of how the data and analysis will provide guidance for evaluating your teaching skills.
Provide Student Feedback
Consider your selected grade level and explain how you will use assessment data and analysis to provide useful and effective feedback to students.
Provide at least 2 examples of specific strategies and platforms you will use (e.g., in-person, via classroom apps, texts/emails, in writing on their work, journaling).
Provide Parent/Caregiver Feedback
Consider your selected grade level and explain how you will use assessment data and analysis to provide feedback to parents/caregivers.
Provide at least 2 examples of specific strategies and platforms you will use (e.g., in-person, phone calls, via classroom apps, texts/emails, grade sheets).
