Step 8: Write up your findings
1. Introduction:
a. In sociology, this is where we briefly discuss what we studied, how we studied it, and what our
findings were. No more than a paragraph.
2. Research question and methods:
State which research question you chose to address. (You do not need to cite or use quotation
marks for the research question, even though I gave it to you.)
Explain who your participants were. Indicate any pertinent demographic characteristics (e.g.,
gender, age, race/ethnicity, etc.). You must use pseudonyms for your participants and not give
away any specific details that would reveal their identity.
Tell us where you conducted your interviews and how long they were (e.g., on Zoom, in your living
room, etc.).
List the questions that you asked your participants. (You do not need to cite these – I know you are
getting them from my own list.)
Explain what steps you took to analyze the data you collected.
3. Positionality Statement and Limitations
Include a brief positionality statement. This is where you indicate any identities or experiences that
you share with the participants and/or any strong existing beliefs about the topic that could
influence your research. (Be sure you have read the piece about researcher reflexivity in the Doing
Research module).
Describe the limitations of your research.
4. Findings:
Discuss how the responses to your interview questions address your research question.
If you want to show us a table or diagram that you made to organize your data, you may
include it either in the paper or as an appendix. This is not required.
Relate your data (the answers to your interview questions) to at least one sociological concept or
theory from class this term.
Use specific examples from your interviews as illustrations of the concept/theory. If you usea
direct quote from an interviewee, indicate the pseudonym of the participant who said it. You do
not need to list your interviewees in the reference list.
If you noted differences in the responses between your interviewees, comment on why
(sociologically) that might be the case.
Conclusion
Describe the most interesting or useful things that you learned from conducting your interviews.
If you were going to continue doing this research, what further questions would you like to ask
and/or what other types of people would you want to interview?
