Understanding Through Community: Synthesis
PURPOSE
To practice close reading of texts;
To identify key themes/topics in a text;
To examine different ways writers look at similar themes/topics;
To practice explaining your reading of another text;
To practice supporting your interpretation with well-chosen examples from a text, situating the context and explaining the interpretation
TASK
For this final essay, imagine a conversation between Lamya H and Aud Mason-Hyde about a theme/ topic that both address in their work. Write a short “scene” or story with Lamya and the other writer as characters talking with each other. Describe the setting Given your understanding of both Hijab Butch Blues and central ideas in the other writer’s work, how would each author respond to the other? Where would they agree? Disagree? How would they build on the other’s ideas? Where would they test each other? At the end of their conversation, what new insights would they discover about the theme from talking with each other?
After you’ve written this imaginary conversation, write a short essay explaining why you wrote the dialogue the way you did. What specifically in each writer’s work showed you that the writers would have the perspective in the topic you wrote for them. Refer to specifics from both pieces, and explain in your own words what these specific passages reveal to you about each writer’s worldview. Additionally, what did you discover about this theme or topic from the exercise of imagining this conversation between the two writers.

the essay is relatively free of common spelling or typographical errors
This essay should describe a realtionship between two texts, Hijab butch blues a book by lamya H, and Toilets, Bowties, gender and me , a short ted talk by audrey mason hyde. This essay could more foucus on the idea of gender not being restrictive and how both of these texts show that, and how these texts and these authours wish to use thier work to open up a larger conversation to the public.
