You will begin this Competency with a study of the 10 essential public health services and the core public health functions. Studying these services and functions can help you to determine where your passion lies.
You will examine various careers in the public health field and select one that resonates most with you. You will analyze this career more thoroughly, determine the steps that are needed to attain that career and develop some questions that you might ask an employer if you were to interview for this career.

Careers in Public Health
The field of public health is very far-reaching, and the opportunities within the field are vast. In order to make an informed decision about the best career for you, it is important to be informed about all the options available.
In this Competency Assessment, you will research some of the career areas within public health as well as some specific careers that are available. You will examine the responsibilities and qualifications for different careers and choose which one works best with your strengths and interests.
• Which function of public health or public health service resonates the most with you?
• Which career area interests you the most? Explain.
• Within that career area, find three actual job postings for which you would apply. For each job, address the following:
o What knowledge do you need for this job?
o What experience do you need for this job?
o What are the job responsibilities?
o What educational backgrounds/certifications (if any) do you need for this job?
• Now, having researched three jobs that interest you, which job do you think fits best with your strengths and interests?
• Locate two professional development activities that you could do to prepare yourself for this job and describe them.
• Suppose you are interviewing for this job. Create a list of at least five (5) questions you could ask in the interview.
