With written prompts, ChatGPT can create essays on various topics, write programming codes, draft emails and memos, and plan events. Freely accessible through a web browser, the software has been rapidly embraced by the public. It is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users within two months of its launch in November 2022, making it the fastest-growing app in history. Given its functional capabilities, ChatGPT has led to significant disruptions in education. Educators around the world discovered that in addition to producing professionally written essays, the software can achieve a B to B- score on a Wharton MBA Operations Management Exam, perform at or near the passing threshold of 60% accuracy on the United States Medical Licensing Exam, pass the bar exam with a score approaching the 90th percentile, and pass the CPA exam with an 84% average. College students have quickly recognized how this tool could change their approach to assignments and exams. ChatGPT can help them brainstorm ideas, generate report outlines, and identify code errors. However, at the same time, ChatGPT can be used to plagiarize on exams and assignments. Academia has expressed mixed reactions toward student use of ChatGPT. Some scholars consider it a complementary tool to enhance learning. Educators need to adapt their strategies and effectively incorporate ChatGPT into their curriculum. Others perceive ChatGPT as a high-tech academic misconduct tool that can help students avoid learning. Students can generate answers to test questions and create original content that can be submitted with or without edits. Imagine that Provost Ravi Krovi at Weber State University has asked you to be on a committee to decide on the policy on using the large language models like ChatGPT on campus. Your committee should prepare a memo for the university’s leadership, providing recommendations on how to proceed.
