Background: The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter examines the experiences of the generation of the American women who took industrial jobs during WWII. Faced with a labor shortage due to the war, many industries, including those that produced directly for the war effort, made a concerted effort to recruit women to positions on the assembly line as welders, as machine feeders, and so on. The recruitment campaign framed its message so as to appeal to womens sense of patriotism. If they went to work, in other words, they would make important contributions to the struggle against fascism. Once they went to work, many of the women felt satisfaction on just these terms. They also appreciated the money, and the independence it gave them.
