Cultural Shift of Ending Victim Blaming
Motivational interventions and health promotions should be carefully constructed and judiciously used, or they may result in what has been described as victim blaming. An example of this is excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, sedentary behavior which may imply that the consequences are a person’s fault. These lifestyle risk factors are personal behavior that can indeed have deleterious results. Victim shaming may be a barrier for seeking help to improve health outcomes. Four lifestyle risk factors that can affect chronic diseases are physical inactivity, poor nutrition, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption.
