The five stages of the well-formed session (empathic relationshipstory and strengthsgoalsrestoryaction) provide an organizing framework for using the microskills with multiple theories of counseling and psychotherapy (Ivey, Ivey, & Zalaquett, p. 183). An essential component to this is the application of the basic listening sequence, which consists of these micro-skills: using open and closed questions, encouraging, paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, and summarizing.
Students will view the video demonstration of the 5-stage counseling session. Afterward, you will provide a critique of the application of this counseling session. More specifically, respond to the following questions:
What specific behaviors did you observe Dr. Ivey doing to transition across the 5 stages? How effective do you think this was? (5-6 sentences minimum)
What attending and empathy behaviors did you observe (visual, vocal qualities, verbal tracking, body language, empathy)? How effective do you believe these behaviors were in facilitating a positive therapeutic alliance? (5-6 sentences minimum)
How effective was the application of the basic listening sequence (open and closed questions, encouraging, paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, and summarizing)? In what ways do you think these skills impacted the counseling process? (5-6 sentences minimum)
What do you personally believe will be the primary challenge with applying the 5-stage counseling session using only listening skills? (5-6 sentences minimum)
