Reading

In what way does the depiction of animals in Jack London’s The Call of the Wild and Mark Twain’s “A Dog’s Tale” reveal these authors’ larger values and anxieties surrounding human-animal relationships at the turn of the 20th century. Use specific textual evidence (a mixture of cited quotations and paraphrases) from the reading to support your claims. These examples should be cited according to MLA 9 standards, including MLA-style in-text citations and works cited entries for each referenced reading at the end of the post.

Choose one or two readings from Modules 6 or 7 which you have not already written about in this week’s discussion boards and write an analysis of it on a topic of your choice. You can focus on the author’s depiction of animals and nature, and/or other literary elements, such as style, themes, and purpose. Use specific textual evidence (a mixture of cited quotations and paraphrases) from the reading to support your claims.

Part II

Respond to the prompt in a minimum of 500 words.

If you need a refresher on how to cite and write about poetry, please take a look at this handout.

Assignment Guidelines

The referenced reading should be cited according to MLA 9 standards at the end of your response on a works cited page. Use in-text citations as appropriate, as well as signal phrases to introduce quotations and paraphrased material from the readings. You can review MLA 9 citation tips here.
Your response should adhere to all standard rules of American English spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Your response should also follow MLA 9th edition formatting guidelines. This means you should include appropriate MLA-style headers in the response, use size 12 Times New Roman font, double-space your text, etc. If you need a refresher on MLA formatting and documentation standards, please see the MLA Formatting module.

While you are free (and encouraged!) to consult class resources, like class Powerpoints and the weekly module overviews, while writing your response, you should not consult outside analyses of class readings found on the internet or elsewhere. I am very interested in seeing what you have to say about the literature. I do not care what Enotes, Course Hero, Wikipedia, ChatGPT, or some random person’s blog have to say about it.
Submit your response as a Word document or PDF.
