An important theme in this chapter is the role played by social class. Football coach Barry Switzer is famous for the following quote: “Some people are born on third base, and go through life thinking they hit a triple.” Discuss the significance of this quote for social class. How can students who are born in the middle and upper social classes understand the lived experiences, the challenges, and the stresses experienced by those who live in the working class or the underclass?
