Essay 2 (150 points)
Choose ONE of the three options below for your second essay:
1. How did sports challenge racial segregation in the US during the 1940s? You may use The Secret Game as one of your required six sources for this essay.
2. In what ways did individual athletes contribute to the civil right movements (broadly defined to include African American rights, Native American rights, Latinx rights, Gay rights, Women’s rights, etc.) during the 1960s and 1970s? You may focus this essay as you see fit, so that it focuses on a more specific time period within the range, a specific group (or multiple groups), or athletes from a certain sport. Just be sure to define your focus in the introductory paragraph. You may used King of the World as one of your required six sources for this essay.
Final Draft (150 points – see Canvas for due date)
Parameters:
2000 words (excluding bibliography and footnotes)
Double-spaced and 1 inch margins
Use Chicago Manual of Style formatting for bibliography and footnotes
You must use AT LEAST six good sources (peer-reviewed academic articles, primary sources, reputable books, etc., one of which may be the book used in class) beyond any other sources you use that were assigned for class. I encourage you to use articles, films, and documentaries from class, but I want you to move beyond those impressions to do your own research on your topic.
Grading
A Papers will:
• have a clear thesis that is supported by evidence.
• be organized, coherent, and succinct.
• demonstrate thoughtful analysis of sources.
• utilize high-quality sources.
• follow the rules of good college-level writing.
• properly cite all sources in correct Chicago Manual of Style form.
• follow instructions as explained in this assignment sheet and in the syllabus.
B, C, and D Papers will:
• be lesser versions of A papers in one or more of the aspects listed above. How your grade will be affected is subjective, and up to my discretion.
F Papers will:
• demonstrate a clear lack of understanding the course material, or
• be plagiarized, or
