Example: Epidemics and pandemics have the ability to cause a lot of death and suffering, but depending on how a country responds to these public health events, will determine how well their citizens are protected. In his article “Polio in Pennsylvania,” Daniel J. Wilson explains how the polio epidemic affected many Americans and the struggle it took to develop a vaccine. Also, David M. Morens and Jeffery K. Taubenberger wrote “The Mother of All Pandemics is 100 Years Old (and Going Strong)!” to discuss the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, its effects, and what ultimately helped to stop its spread. Both the Polio epidemic and Spanish Flu pandemic have been large-scale public health events that America has experienced and has had to come up with solutions for. By seeing what worked during these times in our history, we should be able to develop good strategies that could be used for situations like our current COVID-19 pandemic. By studying these public health scares, America can learn how to use science to slow down and stop the spread of these viruses.
