Purpose
This assignment aims to familiarize you with some education related interventions by
development organizations.
Task
Research on an organization working to improve educational outcomes in Africa. You may
choose from one on the list below, but you are welcome to select another one not listed. Write a
summary report about the organization’s activities (Try to keep your summary to 2 pages
maximum, so aim for conciseness and precision).
If an organization is active in more than one country, feel free to focus on one country to answer
the question of funding and unintended consequence.
Your summary should include a description of:
a. Mission or Outcome: What big problem are they trying to solve? How does this fit into
the big picture of economic development?
b. Intervention: What is their main innovation in trying to achieve their mission?
c. Output: Which educational Outcome, e.g., enrolment or learning rates, etc., would their
intervention affect?
d. Activities: What do they do daily, or how do they achieve their mission?
e. Rationale: Why do they (or you?) believe their approach is the best way to achieve their
mission?
f. Countries active: Which countries in Africa do they currently work?
g. Funding: How are their activities funded? Who are their funders? Does the funding
source appear sustainable, i.e., can it sustain itself in the long term?
h. Unintended consequence: Try to come up with one unintentional consequence of their
activities on children or on the educational system of the countries that they work.
