You must complete a term paper of approxiamtely 800 words in which you attack ethical problems or dilemmas arising from George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s A Brave New World. The paper should discuss and defend one or more practical strategies for dealing with these issues in contemporary life. Finally, you should explain what broader ethical framework you are drawing on, and why. By an “ethical framework”, I mean that you should refer to any philosopher or philosophical text that provides you with the “first principles” that you are going to use in evaluating moral claims.

Then, identify one (or at most two) substantive and somewhat controversial issues about this area that are at least implicitly addressed by the two novels. Ideally, there should be some disagreement between the philosophies embedded in the novels on the issues you identify.
Then, in the task force report, you should address the three tasks: literary, philosophical, and practical. I’d like the paper to conclude with some concrete suggestions about how to put lessons learned in the course of writing the paper into daily life in specific, concrete actions.
Try to make clear what sort of ethical framework you are using and give at least some explanation about why you find that framework useful in thinking through the issues you’ve identified. What do you find to be the best way to find reasonable answers to ethical questions and dilemmas? What do you find good about the way you’ve chosen?
