QUESTION 1 (A Rose For Emily)
1. Discuss Miss Emily’s description as “a fallen monument.” To what is she a monument? Why does the narrator repeatedly call Emily an “idol”? What makes her fallen?
QUESTION 2 (Winter Dreams)
2. In “Winter Dreams,” there are many detailed descriptions of Judy’s physical appearance, but none of Dexter’s. In your essay response, explain why you think Fitzgerald chooses to present them differently. What is he saying about the charac-ters’ personalities? What might he be revealing about his view of these relations between men and women? Support your answer with examples from the story and specific textual evidence.
QUESTION 3 (Hills Like White Elephants)
3. Though the decision the couple must make is not revealed to readers directly, what are the textual clues that lead readers to know what the decision is? How does each person feel about the decision that must be made? Make sure you explain each person’s decision through the dialogue of the conversation.
