Additionally, for this discussion forum, students will be required to respond to at least one other student or the instructor (if/when I make a comment or deeper question) in the discussion forum. This is in addition to the initial response to the discussion question presented. The responses are intended to help students interact on the topic and gain others’ perspectives. There is not a length requirement but the responses should be substantive, meaning they add to the discussion in a meaningful manner. You can state that you agree or disagree and your reasoning for the agreement/disagreement (just stating that you agree or disagree is not substantive). You can also make a comment and present a deeper question to the student about the post. You can also add some additional research from the text or an outside credible reference as it relates to the student’s post. A good way to think about providing a substantive post is try to evaluate whether you feel your comment “adds to the discussion” as if something you might say in an actual classroom discussion.
