I will write the part based on the memoir, to make things easier for the both of us, and will find a way to blend it with the two pages of research based writing. Melba Pattillo Beals, a female member of the Little Rock Nine, faced a unique set of challenges in integrating Central High School. Not only did she have to confront the hostility and violence directed at all the members of the group, but she also had to contend with the sexism and gender-based discrimination of the time. She has written about the physical and sexual harassment she experienced from both male white students and white adults, which she describes as a form of intersectional oppression based on her race and gender.
If Ernest Green or another male student had written an account of their experience integrating Central High School, it would likely have focused less on gender-based discrimination and more on the challenges and dangers of being a Black student in a hostile white environment. While all the members of the Little Rock Nine faced similar forms of racism and segregation, Beals’ experiences were shaped by her gender as well, and her account reflects this intersectionality.
Melba Pattillo Beals’ story highlights the important role that women played in the Civil Rights Movement, both as leaders and as grassroots activists.
