A nutritional assessment is composed of the patients clinical history which allows dieticians to gather information that can determine malnutrition, the dietary assessment is necessary to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration intake, a physical examination can help identify signs/symptoms of malnutrition of any other medical issue, anthropometric measurements can be gathered to obtain the patients weight and height and BMI, and some diagnostic tests can be performed to validate the clinical presentation (Kesari, 2022). Being able to gather these important factors can help develop a successful nutritional plan because we will take into consideration their cultural backgrounds, social economic status whether they have assess to nutritional foods, if they have a cognitive disorder such as Alzheimer’s, if they have problems swallowing, etc.

Macronutrients are very important because they are responsible in regulating and maintaining the bodies needs. These macronutrients consist of fats, carbs, and proteins being able to give the body energy, repairing the bodies tissues and organs, and essential for growth (Team, 2023). One of the most common disorders that affects the bodies metabolism is diabetes. The pancreas is in charge of producing insulin and having the ability to break down sugar that was consumed and use it for energy. With diabetes present, the pancreas is not able to work effectively by not producing enough insulin or none at all allowing blood glucose levels to rise and depriving cells from its necessary energy (Pietrangelo, 2021). A nutritional assessment is an evaluation of a patient’s nutritional status and the goal is to identify if there is a presence of malnutrition, health-threatening obesity, and if a specific diet can be used prophylactically against potential diseases (Bistrian, 2012). A subjective assessment involves the patient’s self view of their nutritional status (Orsitto, 2015). This would involve whether they view themself as being malnourished, if they are uncertain of their nutritional status, or if they feel as though they have no nutritional problems (Orsitto, 2015). An objective assessment involves the patient’s dietatic habits (Orsitto, 2015). This would involve the number of full meals the patient consumes, mode of feeding, and daily intake of fluid, protein, fruit, and vegetables (Orsitto, 2015). These assessments will guide the nurse to develop a proper nutrition plan to fit the patient’s specific needs, where macronutrients play a prominent role in maintaining nutritional health. Macronutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water (Dudek, 2021). These chemical substances are used by the body, which is necessary for life and growth while also reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases (Dudek, 2021). An example of a disorder that affects the normal metabolism of a macronutrient is, “A person with a gastrointestinal issue in the small intestine will not be able to digest carbohydrates well” (West Coast University, n.d.).A nutritional assessment is an evaluation of a patient’s nutritional status and the goal is to identify if there is a presence of malnutrition, health-threatening obesity, and if a specific diet can be used prophylactically against potential diseases (Bistrian, 2012).
