The purpose of this assignment is to give you experience taking advocacy action. Begin by choosing to advocate for an issue that is important to you. The issue must be related to children.

Once you have selected the topic, research WHO should receive your letter concerning this issue. Who has the POWER to make change regarding this issue? You will need to get the correct name and address of an appropriate political representative.

Compose a 1 page letter that will be mailed to that person’s office. The letter must be clearly written with no grammatical or spelling errors! Please proofread carefully!

To make your letter effective, be sure to include the following:

State the issue. Be clear and concise about the problem.
Use personal experience and/or statistics as evidence that it is a problem. Be sure to explain where your statistics and data come from.
Give at least one suggestion for dealing with the problem.
Ask about your representative’s position on the issue.
Ask about any plans s/he may have that address your concerns.
Ask about any current legislation that addresses the issue. If there is legislation, ask to be sent a copy of it.
Ask how you may assist in the resolution of the problem.
Thank the representative for his/her time and attention.
Ask for a prompt reply.
You will upload the letter to the Canvas classroom.
